Herman Santiago Q+A - Young American Expat
WHERE YOU ARE FROM IN THE USA?
Raised in New York (Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan) and family from Puerto Rico WHERE YOU CURRENTLY ARE BASED? WHAT ARE YOU DOING THERE? I am based in the fine city of London. I am a partner at a law firm and an entrepreneur of several other small businesses and projects. WHAT BROUGHT YOU OVERSEAS? A plane, sorry I could not help that one. I was a banker |
for Deutsche Bank and was asked to come out to London to train a group similar to my team at the time in New York (actually New Jersey because we were temporarily relocated due to the World Trade Center attacks)
DID YOU STUDY ABROAD IN THE PAST (OR PRESENT)? IF SO WHAT PROGRAM AND WHERE?
I did not officially study abroad but when I worked for The Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank) in New York (Manhattan) I had to attend monthly training in Toronto, Canada as part of my management training. This went on for about 18 months.
ANY WORDS OF WISDOM FOR FUTURE YOUNG AMERICANS AS A MORE EXPERIENCED EXPAT (TO ENCOURAGE MORE TO GAIN WORK AND EDUCATION EXPERIENCE ABROAD)?
Take everything in, do not miss out. It’s amazing how much you can learn outside of our comfort zone. Also, especially in my case, the US has a few hundred years of history to account for while England has dated materials going back thousands. This creates an incredible amount of history, intelligence and culture. You are now someone special with the knowledge that others may never experience.
Communication is a challenge, even when you speak "somewhat" the same language. But if you learn to migrate and make yourself communicative then you've accomplished what many can fail to reach...a relationship.
